History of The Cundill Group
Peter Cundill personally began applying the principles of Ben Graham beginning in 1975 in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1977, the Group purchased the management rights to the fund that became known as the Cundill Value Fund Ltd. In addition to the fund, the Group also had a few large private accounts.
The Group expanded into other jurisdictions over the years as opportunities arose to develop the high net worth and institutional business (1980 San Francisco, California) and the offshore business (1984 Southampton, Bermuda).
Also in 1984,Peter Cundill moved his base to London, England to expand his and the Group’s understanding of international markets.
Pooled funds were launched offshore in 1985 (global) and 1989 (Japanese Yen denominated). These were followed by two US limited partnerships in 1994 (global) and 1998 (Asian). Another offshore pooled fund was launched in 2001 (Japanese leveraged Yen-denominated).
In 1998, The Group sold its Canadian retail mutual fund assets to Mackenzie Financial Corporation and continues as sub-advisor to those funds.
The Group currently has offices in Canada and Bermuda with representation in the United Kingdom and Japan.
